In our home, I am the chef. And I’m pretty much left alone to decide what to buy and how to cook it.
And sometimes, unknown to my wife and kids — who are fussy — that means using produce that is less than perfect-looking. It’s either because, for instance, I left a tomato out too long and it developed a couple of blemishes or I bought vegetables at a farmers’ market that were on the back or the side of a stall and marked down because they were not deemed fit for the main event.
