NEW YORK (Callaway Climate Insights) — Greg Jackson is never short of a good one-liner and the CEO of Britain’s Octopus Energy didn’t disappoint this week as he discussed the outlook for renewable energy at New York City Climate Week here.
Speaking at The Independent’s third annual Climate 100 event, in partnership with Callaway Climate Insights, Jackson likened the evolution of cheaper, green energy to the arrival of the iPhone back in 2007.
While there was wireless Internet long before Apple’s AAPL 0.00%↑ iPhone, its introduction was “the primordial soup that was hit by the spark and life began,” he said. It kicked off a technology revolution that directly led to the AI boom dominating the global agenda this week as global leaders meet here at the United Nations.
Jackson argued that energy costs are falling so rapidly that they are now even routinely negative in parts of Asia each day. Once providers and governments can get past the restraints of their industrial legacies, it is more than likely a new era of virtually free energy will arrive, dominated by innovative new energy companies like, well, Jackson’s Octopus.
